Elec Gtr - (Heavy) How To Bring Out The Pick Attack W/O Using Compressors

Hey,

Recording electric guitars, obviously the source sound comes first.... assuming that is "right," set up at least (2) mics. One being a SM57 and the other(s) being a ribbon or LDC that is on the darker side.

A good way to get the pick attack to punch through is the good 'ol SM57 with a unhealthy amount of 10k boosted. Listen to it with your other mic(s) and don't be afraid to boost it a lot while ducking it in the mix in relation to the other mics. After boosting 10k on the 57, adjust the rest of the eq to the the overall picture. The meat comes from the other mic(s). Suck out as much lower mids as you can from the 57 to bring out the clarity of the overall sound. The 57 solo'd should sound like sh!t, but in the over all picture it will add a lot. When you have the lower mids out of the 57 it will add even more presence to the sound. The sound of the pick attack can be the thing that makes people say "How Did You Record That???!!!" and you can answer "A 57 "

P.S. I like to use a Neve for my 10k boost on the 57.
