Kick drum, outer shell

Figure of 8 mic parallel and close to the side of the kick's shell (try moving closer or further from beater). Positive lobe pointing towards the front of the kick (where the usual hole is) and negative lobe pointing towards the beater skin. The on axis portion of the mic will pick up interesting reflections and diffractions that happen around the outer shell, while nulls of bidirectional will suppress cymbals, toms, etc.
