| Screaming modulation, Savernake style |
| I love this effect on screams, but it sound pretty f**ked up on anything. It was born from my academic research into distressing audio like grinding sounds and baby cries, which is on going.
- Get your immense screams (or whatever) ready.
- Use either Izotope Spectron, though you can use some kind of vocoder, I'll explain that below.
- Use the 'morph' function. Load a sample of a brick scraping along the floor or a carving knife in the kitchen sink, or something really disgusting! Sloppy sounds work great too. NIN sounds like it does something similar with a strong wind sound on the first track of the fragile.
- Mix the upper mid bands , lets say around 2k, mix it quite hard, or you can do it the other way around and leave the vocal energy in the upper mids and mix everything around it. Use it how you want, but these are the ways I do it.
You can do it with a vocoder but using multiple tracks of the scream and filtering the different tracks to different bands, then put a vocoder on one (usually upper mid band) but use the distressing sample to modulate rather than a traditional synth.
Let me know how it goes, it takes tweaking but I really like this. |
