Studio Open Day?

Hi all, We are looking at putting on an Open Day for prospective artists and engineers to check out our facilities.

We have great rooms, great gear, a massive music complex and a bunch of great clients already but we are wanting to show more people what we do. It's hard to convey "what we do" and "how we do it", and the People involved on a website so getting together face to face and in our complex is what we are looking at doing.

So my questions are aimed at Freelance Engineers, Producers and Musicians looking to record:
What would you want to see at a studios open day?
What would make you get off your comfy couch to come and check out a studio?

Any insights or suggestions would be muchly appreciated!

Cheers
Geoff

Lock all the microphones up otherwise somebody you've never met will leave with one of them

+1 there - have LOTS of people around who know the studio and who you trust, to keep an eye on things.

Vet the guest list - and make sure it IS a guest list. Don't just have randoms coming in off the street, make sure people have a reason to be there.

Provide refreshment. ie make it an evening do, and provide a bar. We've done this before at our studio - it worked really well. Live rooms can also make good party venues! Having people around to keep an eye on things should also mean drinks aren't put down where they can do damage.

Lots of brochures around, lots of staff who know the answers to questions that might be asked.

putting spikey foam on top of stuff also achieves this well. you should however, put plenty of tables out too.

Put your best, most interesting mics on Starbirds around the perimeter of the live room. Cables connected but wrapped around the arms. Gaff tape on the LO-2Bs. That way they are visible talking points, and the guests are "surrounded by great gear." And it will be an obvious and time consuming task to steal them.

Lock up the rest.

Have lots of swag, pamphlets, cards.

Have a "shock tape" of great sounding things you've recorded there playing endlessly in the CR.

Try to get a tie-in with a product or distributor to help pay for it.

Have lots of none-drunk friends helping you out.

Have fun.

Greg
