Let me just jump right into it with my blatantly ignorant questions. Gotta learn sometime.

1) I've got music written but I need LOTS of help regarding the drum sounds, synth sounds, and just generally polishing it. Is it my job to figure out all of that out or does someone like a producer help with it?

2) In a studio session, am I correct to assume that the guys running it won't be tolerant of someone running through different synth and drum sounds to see what works best on each part of the songs? I'm not sure how that goes.

3) What on earth does a producer actually do, and how can I find one?

It sounds like you need a studio that is used to helping solo songwriters. There are lots of these, some of them are in the corner of musicians living rooms and fairly inexpencive. The traditional big studios just hire you the studio an don't normally lend a hand with musical stuff.
