Client release for demo?

Do you guys get a release from the client if you want to use their music for demo purposes? I'm working on a website and wanted to see what the 411 on this was before I get in trouble!

always ask before you use, if you don't own the rights.

True about asking, and rights. In my personal experience regardless who the client is (friend or no friend, be professional from the beginning and stay that way), always get the agreement down on paper. Not to say I have been screwed, but I have avoided being screwed because I had everything on paper (contract).

I always put "artist gives engineer the right to use clips or full song for demo/portfolio purposes." in the contract/invoice

all the bands i've ever worked with haven't had a problem with it.... I make sure it cant be downloaded though.
