Work For Free

Interesting in light of British Airway's request employees work for nothing to save their jobs, and the free sharing ideas of TPB section of the music community.
Yahoo in Australia are running an online poll - 'would you be prepared to work for free?'
So far 70% say no.

And for argument's sake, let's say 30% of music is actually any good and worth receiving for free with artist's consent of course.. Hmmm....

'Any good' is subjective of course.
The ten year old girl next door loves entirely different music to me.

Chief Executive Willie Walsh, who along with the chief financial officer Keith Williams has promised to work for nothing in July, said the idea was part of BA's across the board cost-cutting measures.

"Many of you from across the airline are stepping up to help the company," Walsh said.

"I am looking for every single part of the company to take part in some way in this cash-effective way of helping the company's survival plan. It really counts."

Walsh, who earned 735,000 pounds a year, was one of those to sign up.

I'll bet he was!

CEOs really should work for free, everyone else below them does all the work! The system is topsy turvy!

If I did nto have to "earn a living" I would do all music for free.

In some universes, they pay people to live so they can be free to create.

Wish I lived there!

Seriously though..... does every sensible comment have to be questioned?
As you said 'for arguments sake'.

Bottom line.... at least 70% of society wont work for free. So it's hardly surprising musos wont either, unless some payment system is worked out

Yea I was just seeing if you had a sense of humour..

BTW I wouldn't work for free either, If I had to do that I'd sit at home all day and play guitar instead.. (and try to find another job of course)

Nope.
It's a pop up on my local Yahoo page.
Totally unscientific, but there's 7,000 voters (still at 70%) saying they wouldn't work for free.
It's no surprise really.

Its funny, as soon as i seen that on the news i was sure it was going to end up here. Maybe i'm spending too much time here.

I can see the link. But maybe I'm thinking that people who work for BA are purely there for the money and not because its a fantastic creative outlet?

I dont think anyone should have to work for free. I know a lot of people who do make music for free, volunteer for charities, and i worked for free for a year to get into the buisness in the first place (behind the scenes, not performing - some call it "interning").

ah i dont know, the more i read about piracy, stealing, MPs expenses in the UK, i'm becoming more and more left wing. everyone should get paid exactly the same as each other. Doesnt matter what you do. You should do it for the love of doing it and to make you a better person.

We can dream eh?

I don't know how the hell BA is having trouble when they charged me 200 UK pounds for my extra bag from London to Warsaw. Screw 'em. Virgin Air is 100 times better.

Exactly. He could probably afford to work for free for the next 5 years. Perhaps he's thinking of it as penance... tutt

Interesting that statistically speaking, 30,000 out of 100,000 would agree to work for free.

Yeah.
Although it's 1) by choice and 2) the implication is that as soon as the financial crisis is over normal pay will resume.
But even then 70% wont work for no pay.

I know a couple of flight attendants.
They love their job/
They get paid to travel, something most people pay to do.
They also get great benefits like almost free flights to anywhere in the World
So it's a mistake to think all people who work, only work for money.

I've never agreed with that idea.
Musicians for example invest a lot of time and effort into their careers, often for no monetary reward. When they finally hit a revenue stream it can last a few short years and they have to live the rest of their days on that income.
It's a bit like sports.
Regular workers are not the same.

I guess this is where personal politics come into play and its just a case of agreeing to disagree.

My understanding is that is was for one month. To help them get through tough times.

seriously? there are people working on airplanes who get paid for their labor - who seem unwilling to provide their labor for free, er um, I mean "share" their labor for free...

oddly, whenever the conversation about "sharing" is put into the context of "labor" people suddenly go crosseyed...

so, are you willing to work for free, er um, I mean, "share" your labor without compensation?

really, everyone should just "share" their labor... we should eliminate money - that's the real problem... sharing isn't the problem, money is...

er, um... yeah...

If you work for free and you get laid off, you are pretty screwed because your unemployment benefits are based on what you make, and if you make $0, then, well....

So no way would I work for free. I might loan you my wages however. 25% interest shall we say? Don't worry, we'll only compound it monthly.

I think it's more of a suspension of pay.
The real point is the often put argument that musicians should make music for the love of it, perhaps return to amateur status.
The flipside of that is when other professionals are asked to donate their labour for zero recompense, even for a limited period and for the better future of their industry, nearly three quarters of them flatly refuse.

I just want to see a large number of those multi-million daolar CEOs give up their unfair income so the rest of us can get back to work!

Nothing to do with audio, but it affects all of us...
