Hey Jules, great to have this forum!

I reckon that because the real backbone to GS is gear based it would be good to keep it altogether. I think the overall quality of the passing traffic would be a lot higher than if it was just an industry forum with the studio biz stuff. If it was just muso biz you might end up with too many "how can I get a record deal" threads.

I see 3 basic categories of topics

Music biz as it relates to - bands / artists / studio owners

Recording studio biz as it relates to studio owners

General music biz (the big issues, corporate level stuff that effects everyone)

Its all pretty different..

Perhaps this forum should be 'private' and not visible if you aren't logged in.. (sorry lurkers!) ? Perhaps not.. opinions?

I agree we don't want to get to many 'how do I get signed'? threads or people signing up just to ask that sort of stuff..

Should we leave the studio related business stuff - in the regular forums?

i think the 3 basic categories are fine.

you could have a separate "how can i get a record deal" thread....

(more focused, and not exclusive that way...)....there'll be tons of inexperienced posters, but so what - the more the merrier. and it's certainly a topic tons of people are interested in.....most, i'd say.

general shopping your music + resources / links, etc.

or stickies at the tops of the other respective threads...(please no "how do i get a record deal?" posts) - only that'll never work.....

Hi Jules--

Good idea. I think if it's divided they'll both be too small. A bigger forum where a bit more searching is required is likely more valuable (from a business standpoint ) in my opinion.

It would help separate to have two forums... but it'll be nice to skim all the good business info on one page. It's all intertwined and there's already too many forums for me to read anyway, I find I just check the 'so much gear' one. I say see how it goes as one forum for a week or two then see if it needs splitting then.

OK I voted to split them..

Reasons being -

This is a recording engineers & producers forum - first and a musicians forum second. (Obviously there is a HUGE amount of crossover with self recording musicians, no question..

Even with that in mind, to support studios and 'studio people' I think a section dedicated to the business issues of running a studio or working in them might be a good idea.
Poll still open

Perhaps just putting them all in So Much Gear So Much Time forum would do fine...?

Do they NEED a separate sub forum?

Perhaps removing all the business stuff might "mug" the So Much Gear forum of stuff that makes it interesting to skim through the topic list?

Usually the reason NOT to create another forum on GS is that it might dilute the others..

I am kinda missing the interesting biz stuff side by side with regular gear chatter..

Hmmm...

This was always a trial anyhow..

Lets see how it goes..

Also - I could TAG the threads "Music Business" and "Studio Business" and encourage you all to MAKE USE THE TAGS MORE!

(I am not kidding)

"Gear business" ???

I'm going to change my mind and suggest that all business posts are left in so little gear so little time. I don't think they need their own forum in that they aren't causing a problem and they do bring an extra dimension to the main forum. I think that more people would get involved with them than they would in their own forum.

Can you believe I was actually lying in bed last night thinking about this?!

I dont think it should be. Besides that they're intertwined, more people looking at the same forum means more answers to questions.

I do think the Music & Studio Business forum should be on the front page and shouldnt be a subforum. It's fairly distinct from the others and is kinda important.

Way vague.

Over-creating like the 'New' Classifieds.

The only thing that needs reform is the main section. It's monopolizing other areas for use.

Don;t generalize special areas. Specialize the general.

This site rocks. Keep it up.

As far as privatizing, what's really private anyway? What do I know?

Thanks Jules & Co.

Keep it together, but use tags for people who care about only one sub-topic. They really are intertwined, I believe, and it would be good to be able to see the back and forth from different perspectives about topics that lead to common fates.

Keep them together. Separating them just means you have to search in more places to find something. It also means that you'll have more parts of the forum that will become "dead zones" that won't get serious participation. This section is pretty quiet as it is.

Should we divide the business in two sections?Music Biz/Studio Biz

I think you should divide the business in two because it much more organized. So people can choose which one they want to go on. You could also put a window up where you can type in which one you want to go to.
Example: I want to go to: Studio
I want to go to: Music.
You could also make a page going to gear. Different kinds of gear.

Three categories - sounds like a plan.
