Sound isolation for an apartment?

How possible or practical is it to construct some sort of sound-isolating vocal booth in an apartment without spending much money? My understanding of acoustics is next to nothing, but it seems like something four foot square and constructed of 2" insulation foam (light weight, easy to stow away) would work fine as long as the interior were lined with egg crate foam or something. Am I way off here, or would this work? It doesn't need to be anything fancy or professional, but it does largely need to keep the sound from going through walls and into the next unit.

Way off. It wont contain much sound and acoustics inside will be terrible.

If you really want to build a small iso chamber, it should be two layers of not touching MDF. Air is the best sound insulator.

I would say to build a small room inside one of the bigger rooms in your apt. The walls should not touch any of the existing walls and neither should the ceiling. floating the floor would probably be overkill. Just make sure to have plenty of absorption inside the room and maybe add more mass to the floor of the room.
