Vocal Booth dimensions are 8x4x8

Hey guys some help please. My vocal booth dimensions are 8x4x8. Ive had this booth for a while now. The whole room is completely padded with foam, as for my hollow wood door which I will be upgrading next. My vocals even with Neumann TLM 49 I notice are still boomy and boxy. Would this be because of my booth dimensions? or because I dont have a great preamp where Im using an mbox 3 for my interface.

Yes to the bolded question. Both the dimensions themsleves, it being a small box and the ratios of the dimensions, being identical and 2:1.

Would a preamp clear things up a bit? Like an avalon m5? Or no its just the room.

It is the room. Any preamp will accurately pick up the room sound.

Use some Roxul Safe n Sound insulation behind the acoustic foam. You can get it at Lowes.

Honestly I would not use the vocal booth or put some proper bass trapping in corners with THICK panels (6" thick or deeper) on the walls and ceiling. Basically you want to kill as much of the room sound as possible not only on the upper frequencies but the mids and lows. Foam just is not going to do that.

At this moment I dont have any other choice but to use the booth. The whole booth is filled with foam. Should I take some down and just buy bass traps for the corners?

I would start by putting in bass traps and leave the booth. You could then see how the sounds and go from there.

SOS ran an article five years ago on builing a bass trap for the rear wall of their small converted closet vocal booth. You dont have to do all the walls.

You would need to plug the windows if you need more isolation. I would try it first and see how much sound you are really getting first.

Invest in a few of these signs:

You'll get a little while with no traffic anyhow...
(... and possibly 3-meals-a-day and room and board w/ roomate and 24-hour 'security' )
