How critical is room size and squareness?

Hi ya, I'm nicely set up in a 2.5m by 2.5m room with a 2.3m ceiling.

I'll soon have the option to move into a 3.3m, by 2.8m room with a 2.3m ceiling.

Obviously there will be considerable hassle involved in moving everything over, reinstalling traps etc. So do you guys think there is a real advantage acoustically to be had in changing rooms?

p.s My current room also has a laminate wood floor, I'll use carpet in the new room if I move.

What do people think? Thank you.

Thanks Andre. If I'll hear a difference I'll drag all my gear in and rehang the traps.

The general recommendation is to avoid carpet. It absorbs the mids and highs to some degree but that's not what you need in a small room.

For fun, you might want to use a room mode calculator to compare your current room with the one you are considering.

Hi ya, Thanks for the tip. Beyond the carpet and some curtains there will be no soft furnishing (not much of anything, in fact) in the room. That and my GIK 244 traps roll off their absorption higher up. Do you still feel carpet would be a bad move? My current room was very splashy until I got a lot of traps in there?

I did have a play with the mode calculator on realtraps. From my limited understanding of all these graphs and numbers. I've drawn the possibly erroneous conclusion. Current room BAD. New room, a marked improvement.

You would not be the first nor the last to have carpet, so if you want it then use it. Just understand the draw backs with the upper frequencies. It is not going to make your room unusable.

Is there anything that can be laid down on carpet to add back some livliness? And do you really want that?

Sheets of thin plywood will restore some reflectivity if you need it. Probably not hugely necessary.

Thanks, th floors already got laminate wood flooring on it, so I'll just leave it alone! No sense moving to a better room then going in the wrong direction. I'll use the carpet money to buy a couple more traps.

Why is carpet bad? That link did not really explain it.

Generally speaking carpet only absorbs upper frequencies which can over dampen a small room pretty quick. There are other reasons but that is one.

I was thinking about buying a rolls of see through vinyl carpet runner. I could lay several strips of this out across the carpet to see what it does. This would probably cost about 250 to do a 400' sq area.

Is there any way to determine if it would be worth it? Or if there is a more economical material?
