Cabling questions. Can someone give me a breakdown or direct me to some lit?

I'm planning on buying some bulk audio cable for live and studio use. Doesn't have to be super high end or audiophile, I just need something that works well and is reliable. Can anyone explain or point me to some literature that explains exactly what is going on technically speaking with different type of cable? Big questions are:

-what happens to my signal differently when I run it through a quad cable with twisted pairs from when I use a regular balanced cable?
-does individually shielded cable have any major benefit over one overall shield?
-what is the practical purpose of extremely low capacitance cabling? Is it a quality thing where you don't lose as much high end? can you do longer runs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

*bonus points if you have any tips on soldering 3-pin XLR to 5-pin DMX. I guess DMX may have a slightly higher resistance?

Lightbulb

This should probably be in the Geekslutz section, but I'll have a go at it anyway.

My Audio Expert book explains this stuff in excruciating detail. But Google will probably find good info on cable vendor web sites such as Belden and Canare.

The difference is a few dB better hum rejection.

If you mean multiple pairs in one trunk, you definitely want each pair to have its own shield to avoid cross talk with other pairs.

Yes, exactly.

The resistance of a connector should be irrelevant.

Thanks so much. On a seperate note I did do some googling and discovered RealTraps. Might be very useful for my home setup, looking forward to doing some more research on all of this.
