My Monitor Position Conundrum!

I'm currently re-setting up my writing/mix room, I've spent a long time testing and I've come to the conclusion that my SE Eggs are in the best position in relation to my setup, I experimented with a lot of different variations and I'm happiest with what I'm hearing where they are now.

With that said, I have always been a big NS10 user and could not do without them for reference however as you can see I'm a little bit restricted for space in and around that area with only one pair of speaker stands at present so I haven't been able to try them on the outside of the Eggs.

I'm worried that in this position with the NS10's on MoPad's on the shelf they will be affecting the sound of the Eggs and I'll end up with a comb filtered response.

I'm finding it difficult to hear anything horrendous like this but I'd appreciate everyones opinion to decide what would be the best solution for my setup. it's not a problem to go out and get more stands but untill then I thought I'd get some feedback from you wonderful people.

Thanks

If your concerned about comb filtering , I'd be much more worried about that huge desk in front of you. Can you do something about that because that is comb filter heaven right there.

Sorry, I probably should have stated that I'll have a load of stuff on that surface, my main keyboard and/or my control surface, Not really alot else I can do to help as I need them to be in front of me but they will at least change the angle of reflection and not just a flat surface.

You might be able to absorb the desk reflection with polyurethane foam. You could put an inch or two on the surface and set your equipment on it. Otherwise, you will need to change the geometry of the desk itself.

You are almost certainly getting some comb filtering in the midrange from the NS10s in the way, also from the desk. I'd move the NS10s if you like where the eggs are. If there is a reflective surface between you and the speakers, then try to angle them so that they aim the reflections away from your head. You can also use small absorbers, but those usually aren't practical in terms of workflow and ergonomic set up....

You may be getting some reflections off the 10's but the way to really tell is to test with REW and view the reflections. Here it the program.

BTW you may want to also check your early reflection panels left and right of you to make sure those are placed correctly. Hard to tell but they might be a bit to high.
How to check them.

Thanks for the replies so far, it's being greatly appreciated

I fully understand the issue with the furniture however like all studios I have to think about ergonomics and work flow and this is my only option at the moment I just need to make the best of what I have, all my final mixes are done in an SSL room with a much better control room but I'm just trying to squeeze every ounce of sonic stability out of whats already there to work with.

I have made a couple of changes, the Tannoy DC 2000's will NOT be for monitoring, I'll either leave them there or get new speaker stands if this is deemed by the majority to be a better setup, If I leave them there I might just wire them up as Hifi speakers for non critical listening but more importantly it allows me for the time being to alter the relationship of both sets of monitors.

I have lowered the Egg's and as explained before I must have my keyboard in front of me, I'm thinking of doing away with my control surface and just using iPad apps for that as I program so much nowadays the keyboard is the hub of what I do professionally in the studio, (thats sounds odd cos I'm drummer/guitarist before keyboard player)

The NS10's aren't maybe as important as they once were for me as I'm very happy with what I'm getting from the Egg's but I still must integrate them to keep some perspective.

Using a mirror I can't see the Egg's tweeter at all at the level/angle of the keyboard surface or from the shelf the computer screen is on, I have to float it in mid air about the level of my chin to see them (this is good I'm assuming). I can however see the NS10 tweeter towards the top right corner of the keyboard but this is most likely where I'll have my fairly large Kingston trackball and my monitor controller in the same position on the other side both plonked on top of the JD-800 to break up those reflections, I think the ns10's need to be a bit lower and not tilted downwards which will help I think but I haven't been able to try that yet,

So far is this new arrangement on the right likely to be - A) Better - B) Worse - C) Better in general but causing new problems at the same time.

thanks again

It's very difficult to find a good position for only one pair of loudspeakers in the small room without compromises... for two and more pairs, that is impossible without heavy losses in details and bass response for additional pairs... only one acceptable position may exist in small room for pair of speakers.

I recommend you to use stands, move you desk away from the wall, and put your egg looking speakers on the top of the NS10s, slightly down tilted to target your ears, and visit this thread to read about best possible loudspeaker position pursuit:
Speaker placement methods
treat your speakers as one pair, and try to find position behind your desk, as best as you can, following protocol described in thread above.

Good luck!

Angle

A fairly small angle on the desktop would greatly reduce the comb filtering.
