Treatment/Isolation

I will be recording a bluegrass band next month in my home. I would like to record the band 'live' - 5 instruments, one vocalist (adding harmonies later).

Acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and acoustic bass.

The room I have is roughly 13' x 21' - hardwood floors, no treatment (yet).

The room is also open to the kitchen (approx same dimensions).

In the past, we have tried doing this several different ways, but never all in the same room. I would like to mic each instrument and vocal - not gang around 1 or 2 mics. I realize their will be bleed and isolating the bass is more of a challenge.

I have some ideas about how to treat the room and isolate the instruments, but I would like to hear from y'all.

What wouldya do?

Gobos can be very helpful to gain some acoustic treatment around each instrumentalist while providing some isolation, so the mics won't get so much bleed as before. Something like this: Screen Panel : GOBO : GIK Acoustics

If I put up gobos, would treating the walls be necessary? Broad band (bass traps) or just moving blankets?

It depends. If you have gobos surrounding them, then not really. The nice thing about gobos too, is when they are not in use, you can use them as bass traps elsewhere in the room for mixing and such.
