Help treat practice space!

My new rehearsal space is terrible! I've done a lot of reading here and a few other places and I had a few questions still.

The space has tons of echo and sound bounces everywhere. I am thinking of building an army of 2" thick absorption panels and 4-6" bass traps. I want to put in a few clouds as well.

As it stands now its borderline unplayable in there, theres so much crap bouncing around. If I clap it takes prolly 300 mS to die out, maybe more. Theres some flutter echo. This room won't be recorded in, it just needs to be acceptable for practice.

I was planning on making the panels based around Owens Corning 703 but it is rather expensive. Is there a cheaper (much cheaper preferably) alternative? The room is rather big so I'm going to need to make A LOT of panels I think. Its about 20x30.

Any suggestions?

You could put in shelves and store things in boxes on them. This actually adds a good amount of diffusion and slight absorption.

Mineral wool such as Thermafiber or Roxul is a cheap substitute for 703. You can find it in the same dimensions as well.

Thanks! The shelves and boxes would be okay if we had stuff to store.

For those... Thermafiber and Roxul? What model of stuff tho? Those are brand names right? What specific product would i look for?

Just look for a density about 2.5 - 5 pounds a cubic foot. Doesn't matter what brand name it is.

I'd like to read your results.
What about recording a session before and after?

. That will certainly do. Since Safe'n'Sound is only 3" thick, think about doubling some of them up to make a few 6" thick panels (perhaps for the corners - they will work great)

Exactly! Thanks for this solid info, I was planning on doubling it up for the bass traps in the corners. I'm really hoping this helps the room a lot.

Its not for a recording space its just for practice. The way it is now its unbearable to play loud music in, it just bounces off of everything!

We may even need to build a couple of clouds if the walls aren't enough

If your flooring is hard (wood, cement, tile, etc) I would definitely recommend clouds. But some thicker throw rugs can help a bit too.
