Monitor (LCD) vs speaker placement

Hi

Am i correct in believing that it is detrimental to place the computer screen/monitor closer to the listener than the studio speakers?

i.e. the monitor should not be 'inside' the equilateral triangle?

This was my understanding, however, this means my 24" screen is far too small to be seen from 3-4 feet away (slightly raised behind mackie controls, computer keyboard, etc). This is how i've been using it so far and i'm getting headaches.

Just for now (editing tons of audio, working with headphones etc) i've placed it much closer, and i can finally see again! No more headaches or squinting.

I assume the 'only solution' is to buy an 32" or larger 1080p LCD TV to place in line/behind the speakers, so that i can still see everything - or is it 'fine' to have the monitor much closer like this?

I am pretty sure i know the answer, just trying to avoid spending £300 on a new screen

Cheers

Ed

Thanks.
Be careful when you choose TV screens, I think that you need something bigger than 32" at 3-4' distance... for example 40" or bigger... try to run DAW session from your notebook, before purchase.

EDIT: if you double the distance from screen, so you can double the size of screen (diagonal dimension)... only IF you have the same resolution on both (1080p vertical)...

That would completely depend on how it’s implemented in the desk. If properly done (built in with an angle thus minimizing reflections and a well thought out design in general minimizing reflections due to diffraction in combination with proper placement of the speakers), it´s usually not a big problem. If however just placed straight up on a normal desk yes; the screen as well as the desk will cause problems (reflections from the desk and screens due to diffraction.

If you want to know how bad your situation is: just make some measurements (REW is free) and check the ETC.
