clearer sound from my home stereo??

I've got my studio set up in my living room.. I am currently using Dynaudio Bm6A monitors and a KRK sub, but found using my home stereo better for picking out sounds for my tech house productions for some strange reason..

I feel like the bass is tighter and the sound is clearer with my home stereo - I feel like I am able to hear the entire mix as a whole better. I can really distinguish between good samples (proper for the track), and bad ones, whereas everything seems to sound good on my dynaudios...

Is this normal?

Am I too engulfed in the mix with my dynaudios, because I'm sitting to close to them?

Is my sub in the wrong place, under my desk?

Lightbulb

Do you have any acoustic treatment? If not, that's the place to start if your concern is clarity:

Acoustic Basics

If one system sounds better than the other, it's likely due to the rooms and their different sizes and layouts.

Are both of your sound systems situated in the same room?

I actually have a similar 'problem' with a similar set-up.....

+1!

--------

Considering both systems are in the same room, it could be their position in the room. Have you tried moving your monitors and sub over to where the home theater system is and tried listening there? You can confirm whether the position is causing the issue or not by that method.

Also, it could certainly be your sub placement. Placement of a sub is very important in a room and can require a lot of trial and error. Most of the bad effects of sub placement are due to SBIR. I would also recommend not putting subs next to a corner wherever possible, as you can drive multiple room modes their hardest at corners. Our article on SBIR is certainly helpful for understanding how to place speakers in a critical listening area: Learning SBIR | Speaker Boundary Interference Response

without a sketch of your room layout, speaker placement and room treatment it is pretty tough to give you a better answer than the one Ethan gave you.

Is it better to have my monitors on stands or on the desk? Currently I have them on Auralex isolation pads, but I feel like there is still a fair amount of vibration and sound deflection coming off my desk... hard to tell..
