Cloud safety

I just want to know if a cloud can loose rockwool fibers more easily than a normal wall panel because the slab is supported by the fabric (and then the fibers fall on the desk)?

Also, I know there are several topics about this but how can you hang a cloud on a drywall ceiling?

Thanks!

There will be precipitation over time, yes, and moreso with rockwool (mineral fiber) than with proper rigid fiberglass. Personally I would never use rockwool for a cloud given the choice, but from past experience will always add a layer of 'ultra' thin plastic film under the final fabric in the case of overhead absorbers - particularly over the desk regardless of wool type.

Hanging the cloud from drywall can be easily accomplished by using hooks with drywall anchors - the cloud then suspended from these hooks with chain, wire or strong cord.

For early reflection points you do not want to have any kind of reflective surface so I really would vote against that (sorry to say). The good news is in all the years I have been doing this I have never seen nor been told that it has leaked from a cloud. Needless to say this is our product so I can only go from that.

Of course I'm speaking from my own experience and referring to typical DIY absorber panels. Also I'm using Isover rigid glasswool panels for clouds which is possibly different from OC. As for early reflections, my latest experience with a new cloud has shown an improved sound field, I think the highs were being "sucked out" by the rest of the absorption and the new cloud with a thin foil (the cloud is also angled) helps to keep them alive. I must also say I'm referring here to midfield configuration - I cannot say I notice any difference with the nearfields apart from a tighter bass in the front of the room.

WRT hanging a cloud, I'd recommend locating the ceiling joist with a stud finder and attaching to them rather than using a drywall anchor. I typically pre-drill the joist with a 1/8" bit, then place 1/4" thread diameter screw eyes.

Hey Glenn, can I add a small sheet of polyester batting (like 1/2'' thick) just to be sure?

Send a message via Skype™ to gullfo
for hanging you can use 1x4 lumber strips spanning the joists or a sheet of plywood (say 3/4") so you have more options on positioning the cloud. i prefer chains and hooks so you can alter the angle of the cloud(s) as well.
