Vocal Booth or No Vocal Booth?

Hey guys, I’m after your thoughts on whether or not I should put a booth in my small studio & if so what is the best approach for vocal booth acoustics treatment
I inherited the space with the frame built and the dimensions are 4.5 ft by 5.2 ft and 8ft high whilst the room dimensions are 15ft (including the 4.5ft booth in the corner) by 9.3ft and 8ft high. I could easily take the frame for the booth down if necessary as I read on real traps that in most small studio's it is better to not build one, however, I do want good isolation so my neighbours aren’t disturbed when I have a powerful singer recording vocals or a resonant Cello for instance.
So with the given dimensions, and isolation requirements, would you guys suggest building one or focus on isolating the control room and using a portable booth using panels like the real traps PVB behind the listening position in the corner?

As a side note? How would I build my own panelled booth like PVB-I can’t find them in the UK and shipping is expensive

Thanks

I would focus on iscolating the full control room. When you record vocals, you can construct a temporatry vocal booth using broadband absorptive panels, or a product like PVB.

15x9x8 is just barely a vocal booth as it is... 4.5x5.2x8ft is a nice mic locker, storage closet, amp iso or some combination of the three... but it's certainly not all that worthy of being called a vocal booth.

I agree with the above. If the control rooms acoustics are done right there is no reason you can not also record in that room. In the end it should cost you less and sound MUCH better.

I hate vocal booths.

Especially for singing.

Many like 'em, though.

Don't like headphones, either.

I guess I'm strange.

Interesting opinion, many companies that manufacture vocal booths have models that fall within that size range and even smaller from 4 x 4 up to 16' x 16'. 4' x 6' is very common in small studios. After all you are going for isolation not room acoustics.

Good advice. Tiny booths (especially tiny booths where the dimensions are related, such as 4x4x8) are really hard to get a good sound in.
