Can I turn my drawer into a rack space?
I have three 20" wide drawer spaces on one side of my current desk. I know rack gear is usually 19" wide.

I was wondering if I install rack strips on the sides, will the gear fit nicely or is that extra inch too much or too little?

Just use appropriate thickness strips of wood to shim the width down to ~19 1/16". Personally, I'd glue the shims to the desk but that's your call.

How thick should the shims be and do you think I could pick all this up at a Lowes or Home Depot?

20 - 19 1/16 = 15/16

(15/16) / 2 = 15/32"

This assumes that your 20" measurement is accurate and consistent. Adjust accordingly.
