Acoustical Gear for Pro Studio

Can I get some input on what are some good surfaces for studio rooms and some trustworthy places to purchase from? I am building a studio and of course needing diffused and reflective walls. What is the best materials to go with and is it better to pretty much build it yourself with things you can locally purchase or is it better to go with a big acoustical company?

Any help here is appreciated!

Are you thinking of having acoustic panels mounted on the walls or incorporating absorption (bass traps) into the walls?

For building a studio I recommend getting the book "Build it like the pros". It will save you a lot of time and money in the end.

I am thinking about just acoustic panels on the walls in the iso booths and control room but I need some other more reflective surfaces in the live room. And I am just not sure if there are supplies that I could make this myself with. I am doing double studded walls with 2 layers of drywall on each side as well.

I have read this book and there is a lot of great info that I am going by for sure but I want to hear what some other people have done on here to get the best sounding rooms and what surfaces they are using and how they built it themselves.

How much absorption versus reflection or diffusion is best depends a lot on the size of the room, and also on your budget. Without seeing photos or even knowing the dimensions, it's impossible to comment knowledgeably.

I wrote a blog post about this not too long ago, maybe this is helpful: ASI BLOGS
Check out some diffusers here, I'm not sure what you'd make them out of yourself, but a few of these should suffice for your average size recording room.

What would you define as "average size"?
