DIY Desk ($150, $2,200 retail)

I am all but a Senior in High School that is an audio enthusiast and record small local clients around town but looking to go through Texas State San Marcos Audio Production Bachelor in Science after High School. In the meantime I wanted a desk that fit my needs but definitely didn't have over 2 grand lying around. I decided to take up the hassle of a DIY desk. I spent more time measuring and doing math than I think I did cutting and building but I believe it paid off. In pictures I have yet to put on rack rails, foam monitor lifts, etc. but the space on the sides both above and below desktop are perfect size for rackmounts. My desk space is also about 30" longer than the retail version.

Hopefully this will help those interested and maybe need inspiration to build their own desk. I will try to answer any questions!

Excellent work. I would love, love, love to have a desk like that.

Great job.

How much time did it take to complete everything?

Thanks for the compliments! I'm afraid I may be a better carpenter than an engineer :S. Hopefully that'll gradually change in upcoming years.

As far as the length of the project time I had been dreaming and throwing around numbers on and off for about 2 weeks. Once I had the majority of my numbers I made my first Lowe's trip on a Saturday and was finished with the whole thing by the following weekend. This was during a summer week with no classes though, some days I worked only an hour or so, other days I'd work 6 hours collectively.

nice desk, really nice work. but I have one question.

shouldn't your listening distance be farther away from the desk, since your speakers are so far apart?

Yes this is very much correct! For picture sake I just slapped those monitors up there just to look pretty, but yes they are angled out more into the room rather than me sitting with my stomach up against the desk, that is for sure! Everything was also built so that the tweeter would be right at my personal ear level. My listening distance isn't to bad, I can still reach my hands to the new acquired MCUpro and just listen. It feels really nice to me, some may not like having to sit as far out as I have to. My keyboard and pad and mouse are now on a slider as well so I naturally sit further out anyway.

I also have plenty of room behind the desk that if I ever found it necessary I could put some monitor stands in (I am in a different room now), but I have no need to at the moment. Like I said I'm comfortable as is.

I don't know if you did this deliberately, but it appears that the mounts you built for your speakers are lower than the "best seller".

I bought one of the "best sellers" and had to buy an extension to my adjustable swivel chair so that my ears were at tweeter level.

Well done.

While I was crunching numbers I took a tape measure to my ear while sitting in my own chair. The mounts were built perfectly with my yamaha's tweeter height and my ear in mind.

This also has my large work surface sitting at about 27" off the ground (actually I just checked out omnixrax specs and the "bestseller" sits at 26.8 so they're about the same). This height is a bit lower than what I was previously used to but with the MCUpro sitting on top it is a very comfortable height.

My monitor mounts are also a bit more slanted, so with the slant and the reduced height in mind I can't fit as many units on the side racks above the desktop. There is still A LOT of room to grow into on this desk, especially with the space on the bottom.

I'll see if I can get some better photos up! I had a feeling it wouldn't take long to run into this comment :P but I had these photos on hand.

On another note, as I think I may have mentioned already the desk is not in the same room as it used to be (in these pictures). I just recently had this 100"+ desk moved.

The surface where my screens sit on was fairly easy to take apart without damage. I was also able to get under and peel back the rubber flooring where the main surface areas sits on the lips of the side boxes (because of this lip I also had to dismount my monitor platforms, no biggie). I was able to move it in four big chunks and then reattach the monitor platforms, put the rubber flooring back into place and at the end of it all, I stopped by Lowe's and picked up a $2 strip of the same flooring and patched the ripped up areas.

Good to know it doesn't have to always live in one spot (especially being a Sr. in High School).

Do you say this to isolate the resonance of my speakers? Or to create a better angle/listening spot?
