Workspace treatment

I have a workspace that is essentially an 'alcove' in the basement.

Dimensions are:

Length: 10
Width: 7
Height: 8

I used the auralex tools on their sites to determine what I would need; however the cost would be $600+.

Now this is just a small project studio, with 3 walls (thus the alcove). I sit at one end, facing the 7ft wall (so open space behind me).

Do I need to get the expensive treatment, or would their 2" studiofoam wedgies be good enough? If i have connections to a company that can make the wedges, is there anything special about them? Or is it just dense foam?

One of the big issues I seem to have is when I play a mix elsewhere, or give it to someone, it sounds 'muffled' and 'low'. My thoughts are because the sound is reflecting off the walls, back to me, that it sounds louder on my end (and certain frequencies are higher too?) so I mix them quieter. Is that the reason?

So how should I go about this? Auralex or the company I know that can make me custom shapes? Do I need to do anything for behind me (ex: hang a heavy blanket as a wall of sorts?). Where do I place the foam on the walls, and bass traps in the corners?

I realize that working in this alcove isn't the best, but it's all I can do atm. So any help would be appreciated

You may want to spend some time getting a better understanding of room acoustics. Here are a few articles and videos.

Guess I should have read those first :p

But for a quick answer, will the studiofoam wedges work? Do I need to get the expensive kit? And is it a special type of foam?

I have a project I want to work on, and need to set this up asap.

You need bass traps and a lot of them for a room like that.

In that small a space, the bass (low) frequencies are going to be a major problem. And typically foam won't touch it.
If you do use foam, 'open-cell' foam is needed, not just any ol foam will work.
I would use something made from rockwool or fiberglass instead. Keep reading!

Ok. So I have tested my room, and I've attached 3 pictures.

If I'm reading this properly, and as you guys have said, I definitely need the bass traps. But I also have peaks around 2.5-5kHz. So after reading those links, I know where to put the paneling. Hopefully, this will work better

If you have any further comments in regards to these pictures, feel free.

Work on the low end. Once the low end is taken care of, typically by proxy the high end falls into place.
