Few Basic Questions Regarding Bass Trap Placement

Hiyo!

I just constructed 5 bass traps (2' by 4') using OC 703. I also just bought 4 foam corner bass traps (http://www.thefoamfactory.com/acoust...bassbroad2.jpg dimensions here: The Foam Factory, Acoustic Foam, Sound proofing Foam, Bass Absorbers, Corner Blocks,)

My room is a basic rectangle, something like L:10' by W:5.5' by H:9'

Question 1: Should i place the foam traps horizontally (like in this picture http://media.soundonsound.com/sos/fe...itioning.l.jpg) or vertically?

Question 2: I am going to angle 1 bass trap from the ceiling on my front wall, and then put the other 4 in the 4 vertical corners of the room. Since they are 2' by 4', is it best that i just set them on the floor in the corners, or should they be raised off the ground?

Question 3: With only 5 bass traps, should i consider just loading only the front 2 vertical corners of the room, and then hanging the rest on the ceiling towards the front?

And if I'm totally off base about something please point me in the right direction. Also, I am limited to only these 5 2' by 4' bass traps and the 4 foam corner ones so I have to make due with it as best i can. The rest of the room will be checkered with 2" pyramid foam (The Foam Factory, Acoustic Foam, Sound proofing Foam, Pyramid Foam)

Also, by front of the room, I mean the 6' wall I will be spewing vocals toward. And also, this treatment is purely for improving vocal recording quality.

Any guidance is appreciated, thank you

Ethan Winer tested that stuff in a lab and found it to be fraud. I backed it up with some room tests here.

damn, well i'll try returning them then citing that link as a source to why they are bunk. Any input for the 2 by 4 bass traps tho?

edit:
Actually, I'll just get another couple pieces of fiberglass and glue them to the foam bass traps

edit 2: Another question - Does a mic isolator (such as this http://www.dv247.com/microphones/pri...n-panel--73030) help much in a room afterward?

Where bass traps will do the most good depends on the specific frequencies. If you have only five 2x4 panels, you could measure the room as you experiment. But really, the better solution is to get more bass traps.

Thanks Ethan, that's what I figured, i'll be constructing an additional 4 bass traps to cover 8ft in each vertical corner of the room.

Do you have any input on my question regarding how to place the foam wedge bass traps on the ceiling? Or if a mic isolator is still helpful in a room that has been acoustically treated already?

Agreed with Ethan and Glenn. Until you get more traps, do this listening test to place the existing 5 traps in the places where you get the most from them:

RealTraps - Filtered Noise

I would use the foam thingys Behind the real bass traps
Alone those LENRD things aren't much use for the frequencies needed (ie, bass), but behind the OC they can enhance the OC performance. (kinda like backfill with fluffy stuff)

alright cool, thx for the advice man! That works out pretty well because my OC bass traps will only stack 8' high so there will be a another 1' of space between the ceiling and the top of the bass trap. Plugging the wedge foam bass trap right behind it should work perfectly. Would you suggest I place the foam wedge like this, horizontally http://media.soundonsound.com/sos/fe...itioning.l.jpg , or vertically like the one in the corner in this pic http://foamacoustics.com/Portals/9/Foam/studio.jpg?

also, is a mic isolator still helpful or is it's value added very marginal in a room thats been treated?

^^^ Once a room is treated properly there's no need for absorbers around the microphone.

Note the word "properly". Even some well treated rooms sometimes need gobos/screens around the microphone so............................
