Making a recording space without altering the room

Hey there..

I am hoping to come up with solutions for recording in my garage. The two important things are reducing the sound (for the neighbours etc) and making a decent sounding environment.

(Decent sound environment)
The garage is pretty large and I wouldn't need all of the space so I was hoping that I could minimise the space by setting up something that will isolate the sound.. e.g plasterboards, mattresses and/or whatever works and is reasonably priced. Once that is accomplished I need to figure out how to strategically place acoustic foams (without being too pedantic) and other things like separating the control room from the instrument area if necessary.

(Soundproofing)
I guess this will be depend on what is the best solution for the above.. but all I know so far is that I should maybe seal up the door and the roller door. The garage has no windows.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it heaps!

Garages are tricky places. In my experiences people have mostly built large isolation panels and placed them around the garage. You might try building a room inside there? It's way more expensive but would work exponentially better. What are the dimensions?

Yeah I was thinking of that just not sure that I can afford it yet.. and I want to use the room in the recordings instead of just DI. If I can help it I will probably just use a bedroom to record. Not sure about the dimensions but approx 6m W x 10m L.

For sound proofing I would recommend the book "Build it like the pros". For room acoustics see the following articles and videos.
Acoustic Primer - Room Setup, Testing, Treatments
Basics, Bass traps, Diffusion, Panels video
