Bass traps - using materials I've got at hand?

Hi,

I’ve 2x “Rockwool RW3 Acoustic Slab 60kg/m3 1200 x 600 x 30mm” in my garage at the moment, just sitting there.
There’s some wood in there too.

I’ve yet to do any proper tests using Room EQ Wizard but I definitely have issues with bass in my room - the only place I can really sit is a fair bit quieter than anywhere else).

I’m going to look into proper acoustic treatment in a few months time when my financial situation hopefully improves (also need time to work on the g/f as I've pretty much just taken over our middle bedroom ).

I’ve been reading through various tutorials on DIY acoustic soulutions and I see that the Rockwool is relatively thin (30mm) compared to what most people seem to use, I was wondering if this is enough material to make anything useful for the time being... or should I just not bother?

Cheers.

I suppose you could make a 60mm thick panel. However it won't do much really.
I'd definitely look to making more soon but there's no reason why you shouldn't make this one now. It'll give you some good practice before you get round to doing many.

I got 8 slabs of 100mm thick RW3 for about £35. It's not that expensive. Then used pine strip wood to build frames and covered in cotton. Very cheap if you already own tools.

Thanks guys.

One more question..

My room is wider than it is long and has double-glazed windows behind the listening position.
I would imagine this would be the first place to try and fix before I do anything else? Perhaps putting a bass trap on the window sill?

Cheers.

Try setting up facing the window. The window will reflect about the same as a normal wall but should let bass pass out.

Hmm I could do although a big radiator is right under the window which isn't going to be ideal next to all my expensive equipment during the winter . It's only a small-ish room (which I've also got my turntables and all my records in) so space is somewhat limited.

Find attached a rather crap non-scale drawing if it helps

Cheers.

Where did you get 8 slabs for that price? The cheapest I found online is around £65 for 8x100mm 60kg/m3 slabs (delivered and including vat).
I presume that's from a local builders merchant?

Cheers.

I think they were called Encon insulation. You save about £20 if you can avoid the need to get them delivered. They are just a general insulation company, specialist for the building trade I guess.
