Medium sized mastering room treatment

Hi Slutz,

Nearly finished my room but I'm looking for some advice for the back wall. Room dimensions are 13'6" x 10' x 8' plaster on breeze w/maple lam floor. Front and side walls are killed with rw3 panels, corners are super-chunked, floor is kept live.

What to do with the back wall? I was thinking some diffusion?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Justy

Room seems a bit small for diffusion. Your largest problem from the back wall is low end nulls and peaks. I would use either thick broadband or tuned.

Thanks Glenn, appreciate the advice.

After another look at the room the main issue at the back is in the 40hz and 70hz regions. Looking at the tuning options, for example your 'Scopus' traps, would I be better using a mix of 40 and 70 tuned traps or would one with a centre freq between the two be best?

Thanks again,

Justy

Your room is not too small for diffusers if used correctly and assuming you don“t need a very long ISD-gap (assuming terminated ISD-gap). Read up on the acoustic design concept you want to use before you start adding treatment.

Hard floors are desireable in a recording room. They add to the sound of many instruments. They will add to the sound of your speakers in the same way.
Mitigate this with a large cloud.
Your room is small. The Back Wall may well be your biggest problem.

Particularly if that wall is hard, it would be worth treating the whole wall aggressively. You can generally install diffusors in front of such Bass Trapping.
Space Arrays are good at short range. Depending on where you are, shipping, availability, I expect Jens' diffusors to be great.

For the most part yes using both would work well. On the other hand though we do have a new product that is coming to market (actually selling them now) that uses the mechanics of both tuned and broad band that works from around 45hz to 300hz. So if you where to contact us, looking for advice, I would recommend that product with the T40. Even though your main problems might be 40 ahd 70hz you still have problems throughout the low end coming from the back wall.
BTW you can use some diffusion as Jen is pointing out but for your room size I would put most of the budget at low end control myself.
