Studio desk in the works...

Since it was raining today I moved indoors to work on projects. So I managed to cut all the pieces I need to assemble the hutch. I am going to replace the center piece with one a bit wider though to make more room for my monitor. All these pieces will be put together with glue and wood dowels to eliminate any visible screws etc. Tomorrow I will round the corners of the desk, attach the trim and start dying the wood. Here is the desk and hutch mocked up for a photo-op. Sorry about the image quality I took it with my phone.

Thanks! I can't believe they charge a couple grand for this stuff... That is only a $45 sheet of 3/4" maple ply. I could have splurged and bought marine grade for another $25... If I can sell these desks for $1k I'll make a few more...

I forgot to mention. The center section under the hutch is going to be cut out so my ZED 14 will mount to rack rails flat to the desk surface. I am also going to cut an opening under each hutch to allow space for the bottom to pieces of gear as well as to allow cable routing.

Hey guys!

I made some progress yesterday on the desk so I thought I would share a few pics... I also made cutouts under the left and right hutches to allow for gear to pass through the desk. (not shown) The rack rails are going to be mounted using recessed brass inserts. I figured this would be much better than just screwing into the wood. Instead of stain I used a dye mixed with alcohol. It dries fast, I like it. I also decided to trim the ply using an iron-on material instead of using wood. Looks better than I thought. I am waiting for my mixer and rack ears to show up before I cut out the hole for it. That is going to be flush mounted in the center of the desk. Still trying to decide on the leg design. I keep going back to Home Page design just because of the simplicity. I am also consider cutting out some 3/4" ply with a open pattern. Shrug...

Excellent job! The black sides go very well with the wine color, love it! What is the exact product name for the iron-on material, and where did you get it from?

I am going to start building my custom desk next month...

Yeah totally great..

I am also doing mine, I was thinking about getting a carpenter to make my design, but seeing those iron on edges i wanna do it myself again..

Its all about the finishing when it comes to the desk.

And those racks look "finished"..

Nice one mate

I am in the UK. I hope i can find similar products.

John.

Thanks guys! This is my first attempt so if I can do it.... I purchase the Black Melamine from Woodcraft Buy Melamine Black 7 8 x 25 Edge Banding at Woodcraft They also have veneers that will stain but I was liking the contrast idea. The cool thing is that the dye just wipes off of it with alcohol. I will probably put a coat of satin clear to seal the wood. Not sure if I want a gloss finish it might be to much.

Well I made a little more progress on the desk today. (I have been finishing my chicken coop build) Anyway, I decided to use threaded brass inserts instead of wood screws to mount the rack rails to. The screws probably would hold just fine but I can replace these if I ever need to. I am considering doing the same when I attach the center shelf piece on the hutch racks. It will serve two purposes. First, the monitor shelf will be held up with 1/4" 20 screws so no way they will fail and second I can disassemble the hutch to make it easier to move. I may use smaller inserts and screws to attach the hutch to the desk as well. Again to aid in disassembly. I finished the cutouts under each hutch and in the one in the center for the mixer. In the picture below it is just set in there using the rack rails as support. Tomorrow I will cut out the center monitor shelf, trim and stain it. Cut out two pieces of 3/4" ply that will run along the under sides of the mixer. They will provide mounting locations for the rack rail and add some rigidity in the center of the desk. As for the legs I will probably just go with the 2x6's and stain them black...

Well I haven't posted any updates in a while so here they are. The desk is complete although it needs more gear. I did add a slider shelf for my keyboard and mouse. I also made a bunch of acoustic panels for the walls. I purchased more rock wool and wood and am starting to create a "cloud" to install over the desk. The cloud will have lighting in it as well. Here are a couple images...

Looks very nice. I like how you made room for a keyboard and the mixer.

Would you mind telling me what you made the blank rack panel out of? Thanks.

Thanks! The racks are made from the same 3/4" plywood as the rest of the desk. They are dyed and I used an iron-on edge tape to finish them. The rails are standard rack rail. Hope that answers your question.

This is beautiful! How did you end up doing the bottom frame of the desk?
