Monitor & AI question

Hey dudes, so I finally saved up enough money to start building my home studio. I have enough cash to buy myself a pair of decent monitors, the only problem is that I've been told monitors won't sound their greatest unless they're plugged into an AI first.

So I was wondering if that was actually true. I was planning on getting myself an audio interface after I buy the monitors, but I don't have enough money yet. I was also wondering if it was even possible to plug the monitors straight into my macbook pro without an AI. If so, what type of cable would I use and how much worse would the sound quality be versus having an external AI? Thanks for the help!

My gear
Macbook pro
Garageband (logic once I have enough dough)
Audio technica M50 headphones
Crappy midi keyboard, but it works for now

I make hip hop/electronic music

The monitors I want are the KRK rockit rp5's

While this will be seen as blasphemy on this board. If you're a beginner and just making a some beats, plugging those KRKs into your headphone jack via a stereo 1/8" to Dual XLR cable like this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068OEP/) will tide you over just fine till you're ready to step it up.

Yes an Audio Interface will sound better (depending on the interface) and yes it is important but so is having your room acoustically treated among other things. Its really about what your budget is at.

When you're ready to purchase an interface I highly recommend the Apogee Duet 2.
