DIY Omnifussor Panels

Whipped up a couple of double-wide Omnifussor panels for the studio out of cherry plywood. Cost less than $100 each to make, but very labor intensive.

Turned out great; work as advertised.

+1

Would also love to know the sequences used as I was thinking of building something similar.

Let me see what I can pull together. Took a few photos, but not a lot.

I put them behind the rear-ported speakers to help diffuse that and help kill off a 140 - 160 Hz peak I had going on. It worked!

Hmmm, I could very well be mistaken, but I don't think they are really diffusing that frequency range. If I understand, diffusion for the omniffusor starts somewhere just below 1khz. Maybe you are experiencing some mild absorption in that range? Looks pretty cool though!

That's what I meant, absorbtion in that range, and a bit of diffusion instead of a concrete wall for everything else that's bouncing around. Anyway, it straightened out the response curve in the desired spot when running a REW scan, but I admit the cool looking factor played in as well in the selection.

And in my defense, the wall isn't nearly that shocking a color, much more subtle in person. Weird looking in the photo. Hmph.

Cool - I must admit I've never worked in a room with concrete walls. Must be neat to look at when mixing too Do you ever plan on trying some bass traps out in that position and maybe relocating the diffusors? I imagine the omniffusors effect is minimal behind the speakers and you could probably find a good spot behind your mix position (or maybe you track there too?) to utilize its range. Do you have other diffusion in the room?

I tried a set of the broadband traps in that postion and it created a huge peak. An instant: "Wow. Well that's not going to work." That's when the idea of the diffuser hit. I looked up the absorbtion and diffusion numbers on the Omnifussor and it matched a small peak I had, so I went for it.

I certainly agree other placements might be optimum, but I'm just a hobbyist and it straightened out the curve where I wanted it, so it works for me.

The concrete walls were a challenge. Lot's of ring. I'll post some before and after waterfalls when I get a chance. Stunning difference with the traps. No other diffussion, but lots of broadband traps. Still plenty of highs with all that concrete.

Hey Scott, I doubt the broadband panels created a peak; they probably created a valley that made other frequencies look like a peak. I know that in general, with concrete, thicker traps are recommended as the walls reflect more LF than drywall for example.

It's good that you got things evened out in there as I'm sure there is lots of ringing going on. You did such a great job on the omniffusor though, I'm thinking you could build a couple more and try them behind your mix position, or on the ceiling of your tracking room.

Hey Scottrod! Great build .
Can you please share the measurements and the dimensions? I want to build this, but can't find the proper measurements anywhere!

Thanks in advance!!

Hadn't looked at the thread in a while, but looks like some interest.

Will pull together what I have and post. Check back in a week or so.
