Prioritising Foam Placement... What a boring title.

Hullo!

I'm a student with a little home studio setup, and I've recently got a couple of acoustic foam tiles free from work. I'm not sure of the best place to put them, though. Since I can't properly acoustically treat my room, I have to choose between treating my mixing area, or treating the corner of the room with my microphone in, which do you think should take priority?

It depends, do you do more vocal recordings or more mixdowns?

This. Alternatively you can mount the foam onto movable stands somehow, so you can use them both when tracking and mixing. You'll also need bass traps.

Cake and eat it.

If you have enough foam you should be able to diminish very early reflections around your Listening Position. A Zone Without Reflections...
This same acoustic should be excellent for recording vocals and for clear acoustic guitar sounds.

You need more tiles, my friend. The two areas go hand in hand.

Read up.. articles on my publications page, the GIK site, and Realtraps site.

Cheers,

Rightho, thanks, guys!

I'll use them around my mic area for now, and look into getting some more for my mixing area. Good point about the bass traps, though. I've been lucky enough to not have to deal with any really bad rooms so far, but it's definitely something I should look into...
