Electrical boxes

Framing our staggered stud walls right now.

I have a question about the electrical boxes:

Putty packs or MDF soffit boxes sealed around the electrical boxes?

Does anyone have a diagram/pics of how either of these methods are done?

We'll be doing 2 layers of drywall with Green Glue.

thx!

Go to the 3M website and you can view the installation instructions for their putty pads - the installation is the same regardless of the manufacturer.

As far as boxing out the wall you really shouldn't need a detail (when I have things like large wall panels in rooms I always box out for the installation) it's really quite simple - it's just another part of your wall - and the same manner in which you deal with the room corners needs to be dealt with in the box out.

However I don't see this as an effective manner in dealing with staggered stud walls - the box out needs to be large enough for you to effectively seal all of the intersecting corners (there are 8 of them needing to be sealed) and has to allow enough room for cable and the box (the cable should be installed with a relief loop - not run tight into the box) - so a box out for this generally runs the width of a stud bay - but in the case of a staggered stud wall you really don't have open bays - the middle of the bays have a stud from the opposite side of the wall intruding into them - so in this case I would just stick with putty packs.

IMO the amount of time and labor you invest for a box out just isn't worth it when dealing with a wall of this nature........
