Soundproofing

I may be completely shit out of luck on this but I figured I'd give it a shot.

I am trying to find a spot in my house where I can mix at fairly loud volumes at night without disturbing my family.

My first option would be in my spare room. The problem is that it is connected to my parents room. The only thing dividing it is a 3-4 foot deep closet.

My second option is in my basement. It is not directly below any rooms nut there is a bedroom where my brother sleeps on the floor above it but caddy cornered to it and occasionally my father falls asleep in the couch directly above that space.

What is my best bet for sound proofing one of these rooms? I want to deal with this before treating the room acoustically.

Unfortunately, the answer is that adding isolation to an existing space can be (and often is) difficult, expensive, heavy, and will take the help of a professional.

First you'll have to figure out what sort of isolation you need (in terms of STC, frequency range, etc.). Then, you'll have to figure out how the sound is actually getting to the undesired spaces (i.e. through the walls? flanking paths? space not sealed? etc.). Finally, make a plan of action that targets those points and execute well.

Short answer is: turn down your monitors and/or use headphones when your family is sleeping.

Yeah, soundproofing is rarely cheap and never simple. That said given those 2 options I'd go with the basement, and build a 2-leaf room-inside-a-room attached directly to the slab.
