RC1 and Quiet glue

Hi -

Reading Rod Gervais' book and in the basement example studio I believe he used RC2 for the ceiling and to also secure walls to the ceiling. I am looking at using RC1 because it only loses 1/2 inch of space (plus the 10/8 inches of sheetrock for a total of 14/8 inches).

The iso clips all seem to lose 15/8 inches plus another 10/8 inches for drywall (total of 25/8 inches)...

so tradeoff is ceiling height vs isolation? do iso clips really work better at low frequencies than RC1?

Also - Quiet Glue seems like a good alternative to Green glue. The Quiet glue website seems pretty convincing - how is it to work with and does it perform well?

I'll let Rod comment on the channel but quiet glue is 300% thicker than GG. It needs to be compressed and all you have is the pressure from drywall screws to achieve this compression.

I would stick with what is known to work.

RC1 and Quiet glue

Has anyone seen side mount clips to use on joists? I am thinking this can maximize ceiling height...

You can install simple (inexpensive) clips in this fashion to preserve ceiling height

Again, use the cheap clips. Data suggests that when the clips are fully mass-loaded (double or triple drywall) and damped, the differences between the various clips diminishes. So go cheap.

Cheap clips as in Pac-V cheap? Is there data on these?

Also - would I use the IB-3 to connect inner wall to ceiling? Is it necessary to connect wall to floor with IB-3?

(for basement studio)

Lastly - when building double walls (2x4), I believe the inner wall needs the isolation from ceiling; however, does the outer wall also need to be isolated or can it be jammed in tight floor to ceiling joists...?

Any tips for soffiting an 8 x 24 HVAC vent? ...is it worth opening up and putting some kind of liner inside it, as well as wrapping in MLV?

...the mix speakers might wind up under this!

The V-clip is an example of low cost clip. There's a lower cost one also.

The IB3 connects inner walls to joists, not floors. It is a convenienbce item and not a required item. I built my room within a room without any IB3s. Would have been nice, but again not a critical item.

The outer walls can be freely connected to the joists. If a studio wall is next to the foundation, just come in an inch from the foundation and frame the new wall. Then it's decoupled no clips needed).

Here's a popular soffit muffler. This is taken from one of our SIM Manuals. If you or anyone else would like a complete manual, just send me a PM with your email.
