What are the necessities in building a home recording studio?

Hey all,

I've been messing around with FL Studio for about a year now and was looking into getting more serious about music creation and recording. So I've been wanting to get my own home recording studio (for audio of course). I'm not looking on spending a fortune but I'd like to know what people think are the necessities to have in a home recording studio. Let me know what you think.

Use of the search function for starters.

Once you've sorted that difficult little bugger out, this is the direction you want to head -

Monitors
Treatment
Interface
Software/Hardware

There is no right answer, only a lot of different ones.

Well, do the search as suggested... But there ARE right answers. - Of the other answers... I will not comment.

1. Good modal distribution
2. Symmetry at mix position
3. Early reflections eliminated or attenuated to at least -20db compared to source material.
4. Appropriate amounts of low-frequency absorption should be deployed at least on the ceiling and on two of the four walls.
5. As much diffusion as budget allows should be deployed.

That's only 5 of my top recommendations. More info is available on my publications page, the GIK site and the RealTraps site.

Good luck!
Cheers,
John
