Thread Starter | My room is horrendous. Try to fix or mix on cans?
So I mix in a very small room, the details are discussed in this thread Phantom Image Off-Center? The room is absolutely horrendous, I don't have any tests to prove it because I don't have a proper mic to run tests, but all I know is that any mix I do sounds real nice in my room exactly where I am sitting, yet like complete crap everywhere else and on every other system. I run a macbook pro 15 inch - apogee duet - krk 10s subwoofer - behringer 2031a's. I also have 2 fiberglass bass traps in the room already. I'm really breaking a lot of rules as well: my speakers are nearly touching the wall, my subwoofer is nearly in the corner of the room, the location of my head when sitting is perfectly in the center (vertically and horizontally) of the square that my room is, etc... If I scoot back my setup to move my speakers away from the wall then I end up closer to the wall behind me than I am to the wall in front of me ![]() So what do I do? Say I could spend roughly $500. Should I attempt to treat my room, or should I take the real sweet deal on amazon right now for a pair of sennheiser HD650's for $348. So many people claim it is "impossible" to mix on headphones, yet I borrowed my friend's pair of Astro A40's (gaming headset), ran them through my Duet, and made a mix that is leagues above anything I can do on my speakers with my room. If anyone could provide some insight that would be amazing! In the thread I posted I have a diagram of my room with measurements so if anyone could suggest specific treatment options as well I would be very grateful! |

Cans might be okay for balance and detail but they won't image the same as speakers. IMO its always worth trying to fix the room. Even if it seems hopeless. Just stay away from thin treatments. BTW having your speakers close to a wall is isn't that bad...it moves SBIR effects up higher in the freq range and is actually recommended if you can't get rather far from the wall then it's better to be right beside it. Thread Starter | Wow good to know!! Thanks! And yeah if I'm going to try to fix it, I'm going all out, even if I go slightly over $500. Definitely DIY though. I just have to do way more research.

Speakers kissing the wall is quite often the best choice. The centre of the room may quite possibly be a good choice also. However, I can't imagine how anything by Behringer could be a good choice. DD |
