New Studio Construction

Looking for some feedback on my preliminary studio design. The studio will be built in the basement of a new house.

You have a nice sized live room. What is the ceiling hieight?

The control room is almost a perfect square. You have no symmetry on the speakers because of the door feature on one side. What is the acoustic treatment plan?

Study and master my signature line.

The ceilings will be 8ft.

Is the door entering the control room going to be a problem? At this point I have not decided on acoustic treatment other than isolation from the live space (double wall construction).

Anyone else had a chance to look over the preliminary control room design? Also curious as to if there is any need to angle any of the live room walls...

Please see .pdf at start of thread.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

theriotwithin,

New house?? from the ground up? Can you change the height now?? dig down?

Do rush in too fast. 14 ft wide is not too bad, but you need a good ratio for everything to fall into place. The interior room dimensions are your acoustical foundation - and you build upon that. so remember, you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

A nice ratio would be Sepmeyers 'C' ratio: 1 : 1.6 : 2.33
so make it, if you can, Ceiling 9.1', width 14.5', and depth 21.2'. You can wrap the tracking room around it... and don't angle the room walls in. It's a real waste of space and will only make your volume smaller and modal/ratio prediction nearly impossible. - Maybe it's just me, but I like to know what problems I'm in for, BEFORE I take the job on.

If you are building from scratch and if you building plans are not 'set in stone' yet. Hire a professional. You'd be surprised at the time and money it can save you.
Cheers,
John

Thanks for the info. At this point I am still finalizing the details on the entire house plan so there is still the opportunity to increase the basement height to 9ft.

Is there any problem keeping the ceiling height at 8ft and adjusting to your ratio accordingly? 8 x 12.8 x 18.64 (HWL), or are there an other ratios that work well with this space? I would like to try and maintain a large live room and having the CR 18-20ft in length is really cutting into that space.

Yes, I am also considering hiring a professional. I am confident I can build the studio with the right plans from a good designer.

Thanks

Kevin

Kevin,

Recommended (optimum) ceiling height is 11 feet or more... a tracking room will usually be higher.

But we live in a real world and must adapt. Set your goals high and then compromise to what you know you can do.
Cheers,
John

I am going to talk to my architect and have him increase the ceiling height in the basement to 9ft. Are you willing to take a look at just the space available (see attached) and suggest a viable layout? I would like to include a vocal booth which is a change from the original plan. Also, some of the dimensions have changed slightly.

Thanks for the help!
