How much of a sin is this desk placement?

Hey guys, it looks like i'm going to moving the studio down to my basement, where I will use a pretty big room for the control room/lounge room. I thought about a couple different ways to place everything, but I am liking the idea where I would have my desk and monitors in the middle of the room perpendicular to the length of the room. I know that its reccomended to always have the monitors pointing down the length of the room, but I was wondering how serious this was and why exactly?

The room is a fair size which is why I am think that the "monitors down length of room" rule won't be as important as if it was a smaller room.

The room is 34 feet by 14 feet.

The only way to find the optimal Speaker/Listening positions is by measuring the response, while trying different positions. This is also the first action one take when acoustically treating an existing space!

(check out the stickies)

Good Luck!

It is not a rule. It is a good guideline for smaller rooms. If you have good diffusion and/or absorption on the back wall, as in behind the listening posiiton, you can get good results. This would the listening position about 5' 4" back from the monitor wall. Geommetry on the location of the monitors and mixing surface will be quite important.

+1 - it is not a rule...

I think it's all been mostly said.. Just make sure, as Andre hinted at, that you have symmetry at mix position. - reflections and all. Note that wall density on your left should match wall density on your right... this is often overlooked.

If you are less than 6-8 feet from the wall behind you at mix position, you must have good, deep trapping and if ISD termination is important, a good high prime PRD - on that back wall.

Cheers,
John
