Thread Starter | Garage to studio: room inside a room
Hello, were converting our garage into a studio/rehearsal space, we plan on building a room inside of a room and the height is 99 inches. We have ten inches of space for the ceiling and a floating floor and were not sure whether to build a floating floor or build the walls directly on the foundation. If we set the walls directly on the concrete foundation what are some issues we might run into? Thank you |

You don't need a floating floor in a garage studio. How much isolation do you need? There is a link to ir761 on my publications page. Go to pages 346-350 of the document for double stud walls and their STC ratings. For your ceilings use ir811 pages 80 and up. Find your ceiling construction and add the decoupling and layers of gypsum board to achieve the results indicated. Without knowing how close your neighbors are, I would guess that an average of STC65 would be a good isolation goal. You will have to match the isolation of the entire system to obtain the desired rating... windows, doors, etc. Cheers, John |
