Thread Starter | Some Acoustic Treatment Advice
Hi, I've been watching some of the videos and reading some of the articles in the sticky thread so I'm learning a lot myself, but I still have a few questions about the acoustic job that I'm about to undertake. Here's the lowdown: The room I'm working in is a practice space in a storage warehouse; right out of the gate - its not optimal as a studio space, but I don't want to move somewhere else right now for a number of reasons. I've attached a paint diagram of the room dimensions, but in a nutshell its roughly rectangular with a length of 15' and width of 12'. The height of the room is approximately 13'3". Also, the 2 back wall corners are "cut out" about a square foot (see attached diagram if this doesn't make sense). There's a fair amount of insulation foam inside of the walls. I would classify the room as sounding boomy or boxy (which I've come to understand is most likely the result of comb filtering reflections). From what I've read it sounds like the name of the game is bass trapping the corners first, and then hitting some key spots on the walls and ceiling with absorbers to control reflections. Now onto my questions: First, I originally thought it would be a good idea to artificially "lower the ceiling" by suspending plywood with absorption material about a yard below the ceiling. Is this a good idea, or should I maintain the height of the room as it is? Second, how much bass trapping do the cut out corners provide without any additional absorption material placed there? If the answer is "not much", does any one have a good idea on how to best trap a corner of this shape? Also, what's the easiest way to attach bass traps to the horizontal wall ceiling corners? Third, I've been directed towards Owens-Corning 703 as a preferred material for creating my own bass traps and absorbers. Keeping in mind that I'm on a budget (and anything I put up, I want to be able to take down/with me when I do eventually move on to a better location), does anybody have any recommendations on alternatives to OC 703. Either another material for me to construct with myself, or a low cost but still effective pre made option? Thanks a lot in advance for reading and any help you can provide. |
