Thread Starter | Can a cupboard also function as a bass trap?
Advice from the wise, would be greatly appreciated regarding this: I am setting up a mixing/occassional overdubbing studio in my house. I have already put in a fair amount of DIY treatment which has improved the sound noticeably, but I am scratching my head over what to do with one corner. Obviously, it's a corner so would benefit from a bass trap. But it has a built-in cupboard, which I don't want to remove because 1) it's useful, and 2) it would require a lot of destruction and subsequent reconstruction to remove. So, I was wondering how best to attempt to combine the functions of storage space and bass trapping. It's large enough that I could build Rockwool panels into the back of it and still store a fair amount of gear. But my questions are: 1) Should I leave doors on or remove? they are made of 3/4" pine. Won't most bass frequencies just pass through them? Someone suggested drilling holes in them. Is this good advice? If so, how big? How many? 2) Should I bass trap across the corner, giving me more awkward shaped shelves for storing mostly rectangular objects? or just put Rockwool against the back and side interior walls in the corner, (probably giving me a bit less space, but possibly more useful space). 3) What else haven't I thought of? Thanks in advance. I've learned and applied, a lot of knowledge from this forum already, and hugely appreciate the constant generous input from people who really know this stuff, and make their livings from what they know, but then give it away for free here!

| Lives for gear | Probably
If the void inside the cupboard is damped it will probably function as a panel bass trap. Lots of clothes should achieve this, or the fibre lining as you described. DD |
