Sanctuary Acoustics

Greetings all!

I was wondering if the fine folks here at Gearslutz could help me out. My church has a fantastic sanctuary with wonderful, reverberating acoustics. This also means that, through a combination of bad design and conditions, the sound system is almost unusable. I am moderately knowledgeable when it comes to sound, but this is way over my head. Attached is a scanned floorplan of the sanctuary. The red triangles indicate speakers, the green box is the operators console, the blue box is the (really crappy) amp, and the black circles are the fixed mics (we also have wireless). If you guys could offer any advice/suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I can provide more information on the setup if that would help.

Thanks in advance,

I can't make out the drawing at all, but for a room this size I would recommend either contacting a acoustic company to work with you or a acoustic consultant to do a on site visit.

I can make out what you've got on the drawing but I agree with Glenn, contact a acoustics consultant/company. You don't want to ruin church aesthetics with crude acoustic treatment

Can you post some pictures of the inside of the church?

My church plans on building some acoustic panels with owens corning 703. We will be using a fabric that matches the interior of the church

Can anyone recommend a good acoustics company?

Unfortunately the best interior picture I have is this, though I might be going back by tomorrow so I'll take some pictures then. I also have a crude airspace model if that will help visualize the space. Thanks for the help thus far.

couple of thoughts - check up on Prosound Web as they have a whole forum dedicated to church acoustics. second, if the photo is current, it's all hard surfaces. it might be something as simple as very heavy drapes (like theater drapes, flame re-tardant, deep red or other color) hung (bunched) on the walls to dampen some of the reflections. obviously LF absorption would need consideration so a pro would be your best best.
