thinking about building tube traps for around my drumkit?

so i was originally gonna build 2 gobos to go around my drums, but now thinking that i might want to do tube traps.

I figure i could use them for vocal recording too because i do not have a dedicated vocal booth, just a DIY PVB and a 3 panel room divider with 2" auralex crap on it(it works well for isolation for vocals tracks, but i think there is a 400hzish buildup?)

Also I will have a 2' superchunk behind the drumkit, and first reflections covered with 2" DIY traps

...anyway what do you guys think?

I would stick with the panels as something round is not really going to help any better and cover far less area.

Trying to be like Bruce Swedien?

Is this for acoustic treatment or soundproofing?

do you mean "quick sound field"?
ASC Quick Sound Field for Control Room and Mix Environments,

You could make some poly diffusors and place them on stands, it is eaysier than making tube traps.

You could make them with 4mm veneer and fill them with wool, it would probably work similar to having the reflective side of the tube trap towards the drums.

I would not recommend it as all you are doing to creating reflections that could cause comb filtering. Like I said you are better to just make panels and put around the drums. Has been that way for many many years.

There are different kinds of comb filtering, bad combfiltering give "box klang farbe" effect (is there another english term?)
making these early reflections diffuse, will reduce the "box klang farbe" effect.

http://www.akutek.info/Papers/TH_Coloration2001.pdf

Placing the poly`s at different distance to the overheads will also aid in tempral diffusion, thus lowering "negative" combfiltering further and possibly add some interesting coloration.

Personally I trust the ears when it comes to these things, I have tried a setup with qrd`s close by, and I liked it.

another important point is that the early reflections the drummer get can make for a more inspired performance.

If it does not work out in the room, one can place the polys further away.

It doesn`t hurt having polys on stands available in a live room.

This will not create anything similar to a quick soundfield.

There are psychoacoustic studies verifying that musicians find early diffuse reflections positive.

True. (from my experience, not only from books and scientific publications)
