Sweet spot (too) far from screens

Hey Guys,

I have a weird shaped room. (See picture). The speakers are put in a U shaped corner of the room. Now the sweet spot seems to be a little bit far from the wall.

Now my mind tells me not to put the screens in front of my desk since they'll be standing in the way of the nearfields. speaking of which - the monitors I have (Focal CMS50) are engineered for desktop en studio use. So there must be some way to get the sweet spot a little closer to the wall right?

I added a pic that shows the location of the monitors. When I am at (roughly) 38% in to the space from the wall where the monitors are my screen is pretty far away (headache from squinting my eyes). When I'm not I miss some bass frequencies.

Hope to gain some insights in the matter - thanks in advance!

Move

Go closer, move the speakers if necessary. Get a bigger screen.
There is no reason to presume 38% is the ideal spot. Move and listen or test.
Or do it virtually....

+1 to all of the above.

Numerically inconsistent,

Is the sweet spot partially determined by Durk having his monitors right by the front wall? It looks to me from his diagrams that the monitors would be part of an equilateral triangle if he moved them closer. That, in turn, may mean his (computer) monitors are not in the direct sound path.

I have special glasses that I only wear for mixing film predubs in my small home studio, and other special glasses that I only wear when I'm doing final mixes on giant dub stages. Neither is even close to the glasses I wear when I'm not mixing. That's the only way I've figured out how to deal with all the different distances I have to deal with.

Try setting up the ideal mixing position for sound first, and then see if you can find an optical solution that works for it. For my home predub studio, the solution is a cheap pair of drugstore reading glasses that are about half the strength of my normal reading glasses (The solution for the final stage required an optometrist, but not all that expensive). Of course, I'm an old fart, so maybe you have different issues than I do.

I have never had problems with my eyes, it;s just the distance - especially when reading small digits on vst's etc.

Maybe I should just crank down the resolution - Thanks for the input so far guys!

Ok so let me get this straight - If I were to move them (the screens or the speaker - to avoid monitors here closer they would not be in the direct sound field?

When I'm thinking about it - anybody ever used a LED Tv screen? I'm looking at a Sony Bravia 32inches at 60hrz.

We used a big LCD TV with HD resolution, and VGA/DVI input, for that purpose, please, see attached pictures. (on second picture I think that we used Samsung LCD LE-37A615A, 1920 x 1080px, but I'm not sure)

Cheers,

Boggy

TV

Hi boggy, I have trouble with this. Most of these digital screens have great clarity when their resolution and the computer's pixels exactly match.
I find a big loss of clarity when I change resolution of the screen away from it's native. I use to Lacie Photovision 19's. They are before HD and widescreen so the fonts in Protools are not too small. I did try a 32 inch Samsung, but as it was Wide and HD, the fonts were tiny.
So I suppose I have to go a lot bigger, or a projector?

Hi Dan,
Sorry, i wasn't clear, we didn't change resolution from 1920x1080, displays are only proportionally bigger than "normal" vga display, because longer distance... nothing more.

If you use "normal" 22" display with 1920x1080pix from distance of 50cm, when you place your display at 1m distance from your eyes, you must use two times bigger display if you like to have same size of letters and other details as at 50cm distance... like 44" or something. In this case, no need to change resolution if you need to have bigger letters.
