Need some tips to refine my control room with new monitors

Hey guys-

So I converted a large part of my basement into a studio last year. The vocal booth turned out *really* well with assistance from GIK acoustics, especially considering the space I had to deal with.

I've been doing mostly tracking and editing, but am starting to get inquiries on mixing projects, and since my old Event Project 6's were starting to show their age, and I've never *really* liked them for mixing, I went out and was able to score a mint set of USA MK1 HR824's.

I *love* these monitors, but they have revealed problems with my room. I'm having a hard time calibrating them, and I'm ready to kick up the room design for as much improvement as I can. Now, I've read the primers on this and other website, and alot of the stickied articles, so I feel like I have a grasp on this, but I'd just like to get some feedback on my situation.

Right now my studio desk is in an alcove (see picture) on the right of the room as oriented in the picture.

I know that's likely the worst place I could put my listening position in general terms.

Would it help to move it out of the alcove down the right-side wall, so it's ~ in the middle? (obviously I wouldn't have it block the alcove).

I have diffusers, absorbers and bass traps ready to go once I finalize the placement.

The top wall is off limits because we have a home theater sharing the same space and the wife really likes it and doesn't want it to go away (plus I put a lot of effort into that before I started the studio build). I know, again it's not ideal, but I'm trying to optimize my space as best I can given the circumstances.

Obviously if it's ok to leave the desk in the alcove, great, and I can work with that.

Thoughts?

Thank you guys!

I can take some photos if people need or want those, as well.

It would be good to know what each wall is made of. The concrete/brick ones will have strong reflection of LF, studded ones much less.
Also, how far are you prepared to go?
e.g. You could close off the alcove. Or you could create soffits or huge bass traps at both sides of that intrusion in the middle of the bottom wall.

The top and right and bottom walls are concrete to about 5' 10" up (ground level). The left walls are studded (floating in front of other areas of the basement), with the top left being insulated with rockwool for the booth.

We spent a lot of money finishing the basement (before having a home studio being a possibility with the wife), it's very nice. I can't close off that alcove, unfortunately because the fuse box and fire window/exit are in that alcove. I wouldn't have issue moving the fuse box, but the window can't be closed off per code, already checked on that.

I am willing and able to add treatment, move the desk, etc, that's about as far as I can go for optimization. Anything that doesn't involve moving walls.

Also, to note, the bump on the bottom wall is a fireplace (concrete framed and covered with drywall).

Thanks!

Can anybody else chime in?

I ordered a ECM8000 as well to do some measuring once I figure out the room placement.
