Recording Studio Rooms?

I'm looking to build a recording studio. When I look at other plans I see numerous rooms, such as the mastering room, mixing room, and live room. I'm guessing you master in the mastering room, mix in the mixing room, and record in the live room. But how is each room constructed differently? How do they differ in size, shape, equipment, and treatment?
