Measuring a Room

Which software is suggested in measuring a room's frequency response? And how do I predict where the acoustics need to be placed based on the results. A software with good instructions or help file would be greatly appreciated!!
I currently have an Spl meter & a Rives test cd2 which contains test tones. Is this sufficient or something like Room Eq Wizard is more appropriate?

Acoustics/Treatment Reference Guide - LOOK HERE!

Also worth mentioning is that the FR is the least interesting graph. The ETC and waterfall plots are much more revealing, especially the ETC.

Measuring

By all means try both Jol.
I don't know the Rives thing but the old school methods had reason behind them. Many studios and such were tuned using pink noise RTA and so on.
REW, Fuzzmeasure and others are more powerful and specific.
They can identify particulars which the broad strokes cannot.
Such measurement is not mandatory!
There are other ways to evaluate how a room sounds.
Most of us here are recording sound, we do have ears and a very developed sense of sonic evaluation.
In conjunction with a Room Mode Calculator, Sine waves are also incredibly simply useful.

One way or another or all of them, it is the brain which does the analysis required to take action.

You could short circuit all this and just follow the room setup and treatment advice at realtraps.com GIK johnlsayers.com studiotips.com
