Sure they are... If the desired effect is large reflective surface. Seems you're another one of those 'absorption everywhere' chaps. It's cool... There aren't quite enough of that type here.

Like I said: "A few diffusers filled that way are not a problem but large surfaces will be." and "If you fill a "diffusor mask" with closed cell foam is not such a big thing ok... but a large uncovered EPS surfaces are not OK." Many times when I am asked to help in different acoustics projects I see that they have threat a room with EPS (sometimes the reason is because of heat insulation and sometimes because they think that will help to absorb the sound), but however sound in that kind of rooms is dowgreaded. Amsterdam Mastering - construction thread Styrofoam 2D diffusor ... and yes I understand that diffusers from EPS are inexpensive. |

in these rooms are there eps diffusors, or just simply eps flat panels attached to the walls? The question is how it behaves, is the change in acoustic impedance not big enough for it to reflect down to 500hz? (including the outer shell plastic with higher density) | |

Well yes in rooms with flat insulation sound degradation is easily noticeable, with uncoated EPS diffusors is better but for me this is still budget solution + uncoated high density EPS diffusors are sensitive and they can be damaged pretty fast if they are reachable... for ceilings and higher areas in rooms are fine. However I will go at least with coated diffusors. |

What is it with you and "budget"? The op filled his diffusors with a non-absorptive material. That's it. If the desired effect of the diffusors is to not add additional absorption below the scatter cut-off, THEN HE DID THE BEST POSSIBLE THING HE COULD DO REGARDLESS OF BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS. (short of concrete...whcih would probably cost less if one were keeping score) Perhaps the room is already sufficient for absorption in that bandwidth. No more needed. Diffusor resonance reduced, and additional absorption not introduced. Now, of course if a bit of added absorption in the room is needed, well, he did the wrong thing... not a budget thing. End of story. |

I suggest if it is possible to use mostly natural products in control rooms and in recording spaces and much less cheap plastics.
