How many acoustic panels (bass traps/broadband) and advice on placement please

Hi, I am about to start building my acoustic panels for my studio (on a tight budget) and wanted some opinions on the placement and amount of panels that would be needed.

This room is also my bedroom and it's quite a cramped working environment with alot of bass problems/deadspots and alot of corners to deal with.In the alcove I have built a long desk out of kitchen worktop which is fixed to the wall.

I am looking at the following Rockwool from Build Center here in the U.K.

Cat.No: N08917
Description: Rockwool RW3 SLAB
Thickness mm: 50
Width mm: 600
Length: 1200
Qty per pack: 8
R-Value: 1.28
Thermal Conductivity W/mk: 0.039
M² per pack: 5.76

Here are some pictures of the room (please excuse the mess, everything is being moved out in preperation for the treatment ):

I would need to build some smaller width bass traps (30cm wide) for the corners where the projector screen is mounted.

The guitar hooks are going to make way for trap in that corner.

The door in this picture is just a storage cupboard that very rarely gets opened.

I was thinking of mounting the bass traps in the corner where the main door is on hinges so I can fold the trap back (just like the door opens and closes) to be able to get in and out of the room. What are your thoughts on that?

Would some treatment be needed under the desk?

Thanks for the help,

Matt

Can you move the set up to the lower wall in the diagram, where the bed is now? That would give you a longer throw for the monitors and also better symmetry. You could also open the door while mixing which will help a lot.

FYI in your pictures it shows a website on your computer monitor. I bet they have a education area you could check out and pick up all kinds of neat stuff.

A quick aside....... Whereabouts in the UK are you?

Try to get Knauf Rocksilk if you can. It has similar acoustic qualities to Rockwool, is widely used in studios, and it has the added benefit of a different binder which has less harmful chemicals - well worth considering as this is your bedroom too. It is also better for the environment. Look out for "Ecose Technology" - most Knauf Rocksilk has this now, and the Ecose tells you it is this newer, safer, greener sort.

RS60 is the equivalent to RW3.

It is quite readily available but I got mine from Travis Perkins. Be warned that prices vary wildly - so shop around. I'm a bit anal like that - but it paid off. There were two Travis Perkins branches who quoted me around £35-£40 per pack of 4 with additional delivery. Then, a third Travis Perkins branch quoted me £17 per pack with FREE delivery!!!! Guess which I went with? Amazing seeing as they were branches of the same company.....

Hi Glenn, thanks for the reply.Unfortunately I can't move the setup as the desk is built into the alcove and the projector/screen setup needs to be located where it is (because of the weight of the screen). I have tried the bed in many positions but it is just too dominating in the room.Where I have it currently is the only suitable place for it. I just need to get the room sounding as good as it possibly can with the current setup.

I am reading through the education area of your site too

Well if you can't move then that is that. Trap as many corners as possible, early reflection points and so on. You still should be able to work, but will have limitations.

It's annoying that I cant move everything, but it's just such an awkward room to fit everything in.

Thanks for the advice. I'll get building...

Its cool. Even being set up where you are you will notice a 100% improvement with treatments.
Best of luck and let us know if you have any questions.

Would having this sort of placement be effective?

Or would the freestanding panels to the left of the chair be better on the door wall?

Also would I even need a trap where the main door is if I have the door open?

Thanks again for the help.

I would try it both ways and see how it sounds.

Panels are coming along great.Got all the wood cut, sourced the Rocksilk RS60 and I'm using cotton twill dust sheets for the material which was alot cheaper and breathable than all the other fabrics I looked at. They take so long to make which is the only downside...
