| Lives for gear | PlugHead Productions has new space!
A brief synopsis - the past few years have been in transition for me and my recording life: my wife has been in school for almost 7 years, and we've had 2 kids in that time, leaving me to raise the boys and her to finish school. I've had my studio in the basement for the past 6 yrs., and limited by the encumbrances of 'home' - noise, lack of isolation, and the basic everyday needs of 'home before work' in my life... Fast forward - my wife newly graduated and now me heading off to graduate school this fall, I've happily lucked into a new space where I can rehearse, record, and - hold live events. This is in the basement of a multi-use building, and is a LICENSED room with seating for 50+ and max capacity for 120. I will not be remodeling the room, nor investing in a build-out, rather using the 'one room' concept for rehearsing, recording, and live shows, the inaugural one coming up June 3rd with my band. The room is approx. 26 X 70 with 8.5 ft ceilings, not including the kitchen and bathroom at the rear. There is already some absorption and treatments on the walls, and a small riser for drums. Even with things as they are, the room sounds fantastic! Suffice to say, I'm pretty stoked to finally have a space to call my own, and room for players, as well as having events open to the public where you can listen, have a drink and enjoy some music. Movable Gobos (panels on that are free standing) would be great in a room like that.

Awesome news Jay! Looks really good - I'm glad you can expand beyond your home and into a space more conducive to doing your thing. Now you just have to make sure no one spills a drink on yer gear....

thx Orion! Yeah, safety for gear is a bit of an issue, but - all the racks are enclosed front and back - unplug and snap lids closed so spillage is not an issue, except for a few select things which will be moved when events go on. However, I'm in charge of most in-house events in there, so all the better for my gear! Tracking last night let me know how great this space really is - best room I've had the pleasure to record in since moving south! Onward and upward! |

Right on Jay! I imagine you are in the throws of leaning about acoustic treatments these days. Now That's a long road! From the look of it you'll need some bass trapping and diffusion and absorption . Just jiving with ya. But a bit serious too.Looks cool man, that must be a great treat to have a space back for your work finally. Congrats. |

Good to hear from ya mate - how's the build coming for your new digs? BTW - Remy's project sounds GREAT! I'm glad you made me sound good on that borrowed bone... Just heading to Lacquer Channel on Wed. to master the new album done down there. The space is great, and there seems to be no rogue bass problems, nor is there much problem with reflections - there is already some absorption on walls, tho no corner traps (yet). With it being 1800+ sg ft. and all one room, there seems to be adequate space to not have any acoustic issues prevalent enough to ruin any recording sessions. With it being available as a licensed venue, we've been doing shows there once a month. One step at a time... I guess the litmus test re: recording will be evident in the mastering session on Wed! Keep well, and hi to the gang up north! |
